Expanded clay balls (hydro balls) to use in the bottom of your terrarium as a drainage layer, or use as a growing medium in hydroponics. You can even propagate plants with balls, just fill a container with water and hydro balls and put the cutting in.
Light-weight Holds and releases moisture quickly Multiple applications
Our clay balls are the appropriate size for smaller and larger containers and come in convenient bags that are resealable. Clay balls are also effective at growing orchid plants.
Clay balls for hydroponics Due to their porous nature they hold water while still allowing air to move through the substrate, creating an ideal environment for root systems. Do note that the clay balls do not contain fertilizers. Clay balls have a neutral PH value.
Clay balls for a terrarium A terrarium needs a layer of inorganic materials to hold the bottom water reservoir keeping the terrarium moist. Simply placing a layer of dirt at the bottom will cause issues as water will collect there, causing mold & root rot. More on building a terrarium.
Clay balls as a mulch layer Hydro balls is a decorative and functional material to use as mulch. The soil below won’t dry as quickly by blocking the sun from hitting the soil. It will also increase moisture retention of the soil.

Should I add clay balls at the bottom of the pot? NO! You may sometimes find the recommendation to add clay balls to the bottom of your pot for 'drainage', however, we strongly recommend against this.
If you add clay balls to your planter, instead of using a pot with drainage holes, you essentially create a water reservoir beneath your plant's soil.
This keeps the roots of your plant exposed to water continuously, which will quickly lead to root rot.
Instead, simply use a pot that has drainage holes to allow excess water to drain from the pot!
Use as a substrate, or a 2-3cm layer at the bottom of your terrarium
For which plants:
Root most cuttings, or use as semi-hydro medium for most houseplants
Why THIS Clay Balls compared to others?
Uniformly sized clay balls with a porous, durable structure. Inert & PH-Neutral providing excellent drainage.
Origin of our Clay Balls
To produce Clay Balls, gas is used, which means it's not the most sustainable product.
However, we try and cut our impact by sourcing close to the Netherlands. Our Clay Balls are mined and produced in Belgium, right next to The Netherlands where we ship from.
Most suppliers source their Clay Balls from Denmark or North Germany. But we try and keep our supply chain as short as possible.
